Raw, adjective: 7. brutally or grossly frank: a raw portrayal of human passions.
There've been some really great premieres at the SF Opera in the last few years. Doctor Atomic (about Oppenheimer and the nuclear bomb), Appomattox last fall (set at the close of the Civil War), and now this year, The Bonesetter's Daughter.
Amy Tan's 2001 novel has shape-shifted into a fully-staged opera, with Tan making the transition from writer to librettist. The production opens next weekend, and it's garnered a lot of buzz around these parts. Tan's a local, a regular face on the Bay Area scene, and it's especially exciting to see this production go up in an area so historically influenced by Chinese culture.
